Le groupe tient son nom d'un cocktail, le Stone Sour (du whiskey, du jus d'orange et de la sauce aigre).

Il fut créé en 1992 à l'origine par le vocaliste Corey Taylor et le batteur Joel Ekman qui furent ensuite rejoints par le bassiste Shawn Economaki. Ils n'avaient pas de but musical précis, à part écrire de bonnes chansons. Ils ont joué dans des clubs avec une multitude de guitaristes, jusqu'à tomber en 1995 sur James (alias Jim) Root. Pendant 5 ans Stone Sour a crée d'excellentes chansons très mélodiques, sans genre particulier, mais basées sur du Hard Rock. Cependant en 1997, Corey reçut la visite de trois membres de Slipknot lui promettant de lui casser la figure s'il ne rejoignait pas leur groupe laissant les autres continuer leurs propres chemins ; un an plus tard, Jim rejoint lui aussi Slipknot.

On n'entendit plus parler de Stone Sour et tout semblait être fini pour de bon, jusqu'en 2000, où le guitariste Josh Rand (un vieil ami de Corey) le contacte et lui montre quelques chansons qu'il a créés. Ensemble, ils mettent un an et demi à peaufiner et à créer de nouvelles chansons, de ce qui pourrait être éventuellement Stone Sour. Une fois le travail terminé, le duo jugea que le travail qu'ils avaient accompli était d'une si bonne qualité et était si fidèle aux origines de Stone Sour qu'il était normal de contacter les anciens membres du groupe, plus le Dj de Slipknot, Sid Wilson.

6 ans après leur dernier concert, le groupe décida de se choisir un nouveau nom (ils durent changer de patronyme pour des raisons de droits) ; ils hésitèrent entre Project X, Superego, Closure, mais purent finalement garder leur nom d'origine ; Stone Sour était de retour. Selon Corey, la différence avec leur premier groupe, est que cette fois-ci, le groupe n'a plus peur de concurrencer ce qui est populaire et reste fidèle à son style. Corey dit que Stone Sour est agressif, cru, du rock dans sa forme la plus pure.

Slipknot est un groupe de metal originaire de Des Moines dans l'Iowa, formé en 1995 et faisant actuellement partie du label Roadrunner Records. Le genre musical du groupe est sujet à débat, certains le classifiant de Neo Death et d'autres de Neo Metal. Les membres du groupe ont, en plus de leur vrai nom, un numéro qui leur est associé (allant de 0 à 8).

Chaque année depuis 2000, ils ont été nominés aux Grammy Awards dans la catégorie Best Metal Performance, et ont fini par remporter l'édition 2006 dans cette catégorie grâce à leur chanson Before I Forget.
